Sulfuric Acid Anodizing (Type II)

A standard metal finishing method, sulfuric acid anodizing, is ideal for aluminum parts that require enhanced durability and abrasion resistance. There are various other benefits associated with sulfuric acid anodizing (Type II) that make it an attractive process for a variety of end-market products. Some of these attributes include its cost, which tends to be less expensive than other metal finishing technologies. The sulfuric anodize process also uses fewer resources and can apply coatings faster than other processes, which helps reduce manufacturing overall turn time. It can also have a cleaner and more streamlined waste treatment process making it more environmentally friendly.

Additionally, sulfuric acid anodizing can produce dyed and undyed finishes and its clear and clean finish can enhance part aesthetics. And it can work with a greater range of metal alloys than most processes. You can see why it's such an attractive finishing option.

At Light Metals Coloring, metal finishing is what we do - and we're pleased to offer sulfuric acid anodizing among our service offerings. As anodizing specialists, we offer various anodizing specifications, including Mil-A-8625, Type II, Class 1 and 2, Mil-PRF-8625 Type II, Class 1 and 2, Mil-Std-171, 7.21 and 7.22, AMS-2471, non-dyed and AMS-2472, dyed. Read on to learn more about our sulfuric acid anodizing offerings.

Sulfuric Acid Anodizing Process

As the name implies, sulfuric acid anodizing, or sulfuric anodizing, is an electrolyte process where the aluminum part is exposed to an electric current inside a sulfuric acid bath. When aluminum parts are submerged in the solution, the surface oxidizes, forming a thin coat on the part's surface that gives the part enhanced durability, corrosion resistance, and other benefits. Typical coatings range in thickness from 0.0001 inches thick to 0.0006 inches thick. Coatings can be designed for less or more depending on the application need but it is recommended to work directly with an experienced metal finishing company for custom coatings.

Sulfuric Acid Anodizing Process

So what types of applications are best suited for sulfuric acid anodizing? Some common industries include aerospace, medical, automotive, cosmetics, and semiconductors. Sulfuric anodizing is particularly well-suited for applications where a balance between corrosion resistance, aesthetics, and weight is essential. While it doesn't offer the same level of hardness and wear resistance as Type III hard coat anodizing, it still provides a protective oxide layer that significantly improves the durability and longevity of metal components in these industries. Moreover, the ability to achieve various colors and finishes through dyeing and other post-treatment processes makes sulfuric anodizing an attractive choice for enhancing the appearance of products in these sectors.

Aerospace Industry

  • Corrosion Resistance: Sulfuring anodizing creates a thin oxide layer on the surface of aluminum, providing a basic level of corrosion resistance.
  • Aesthetic Improvement: Enhances the appearance of aerospace components. It is often used to provide a decorative, uniform, and attractive finish. This can be important for components visible to passengers or in parts where aesthetics matter.
  • Color Options: Sulfuric acid anodizing allows for a wide range of color options, which can be useful for color-coding components, labeling, or simply matching the design scheme of an aircraft's interior or exterior.
  • Improved Lubrication: The micro-porous nature of the anodized layer in sulfuric anodizing can retain lubricants, reducing friction and wear on aerospace components. This can be particularly beneficial for parts that require smooth movement.
  • Electrical Insulation: The anodized layer acts as an electrical insulator, making sulfuric anodizing suitable for aerospace components that need to be electrically isolated from the surrounding structure or other components.
  • Chemical Resistance: Sulfuric anodizing still provides some resistance to common chemicals encountered in aerospace applications, such as aviation fuels and hydraulic fluids.
  • Reduced Galling: Anodized surfaces have a lower tendency to gall or seize when in contact with other materials. This can be advantageous for aerospace components that involve sliding or rotating motion, such as fasteners or connectors.
  • Enhanced Adhesion: The anodized layer improves the adhesion of paint and other coatings. This can be essential for aerospace components that require additional protective or decorative coatings.

Medical Industry

  • Biocompatibility: Sulfuric anodized surfaces are non-reactive and biocompatible, making them ideal for medical devices, surgical instruments, and implants.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Anodized medical equipment with this finish can also have an attractive appearance.

Automotive Industry

  • Aesthetic Enhancement: Enhances the appearance of automotive components, providing a corrosion-resistant, decorative finish.
  • Weight Savings: Similar to aerospace, the lightweight nature of sulfuric anodized parts is beneficial in the automotive industry.

Semiconductor Industry

  • Semiconductor Equipment: Sulfuric anodized aluminum is used in various components of semiconductor manufacturing equipment due to its corrosion resistance and the ability to maintain a high level of purity during semiconductor processing.

Cosmetics Industry

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Sulfuric acid anodizing can be employed in cosmetic product packaging to create visually appealing and corrosion-resistant finishes for items like perfume bottles and jewelry.

Specifications

Mil-A-8625, Type II, Class 1

The specification is commonly used in commercial applications. The Class 1 nature of this specification signifies that the coatings are not dyed during the process. The coating can also be certified as sealed or not-sealed depending on the application the product is designated for.

Mil-A-8625, Type II, Class 2

The specification is similar to Type II, Class I, except that coatings are dyed to produce vivid colors, enhance the aesthetics of the end part, and provide the other benefits that sulphuric anodizing is known for. Common colors include gold, red, blue, green, and black.  This coating can also be certified for sealed or not-sealed.

Mil-Std-171, 7.2.1 and 7.2.2

This is the Department of Defense manufacturing process finishing standard, and it's crucial to comply with it when considering that sulfuric anodizing is often used for military applications.

AMS-2471

AMS-2471 is a specification requirement for undyed anodic coatings on aluminum alloys. Contact Light Metals Coloring to learn more.

AMS-2472

This specification is similar to AMS-2471, except it pertains to dyed aluminum coatings on aluminum alloys.
