Passivation Services

June 24, 2025

When it comes to the long-term performance and reliability of metal components, surface preparation makes all the difference. That’s where passivation services come in. At Light Metals Coloring, we provide precision passivation treatments tailored for demanding industries like aerospace, medical, defense, and beyond. With over 75 years in the metal finishing business, we help manufacturers reduce corrosion, improve product longevity, and meet strict industry specifications.

The Passivation Process

The passivation process at Light Metals Coloring begins with a thorough pre-cleaning stage, often using ultrasonic cleaning to remove oils, machining lubricants, and other residues from the surface of the part. Once the surface is free of debris, the part is immersed in a chemical bath, typically nitric acid, citric acid, or phosphoric acid, depending on the material and required finish.

During this chemical treatment, iron and other surface contaminants are dissolved, leaving behind a clean and chemically passive surface. Finally, the part is rinsed and dried under controlled conditions to ensure no residues are left behind.

Each step is closely monitored for time, temperature, and concentration, ensuring consistent, high-quality results.

Our Passivation Capabilities

At Light Metals Coloring, we offer a full range of passivation solutions tailored to your specific material and industry requirements. We support nitric acid passivation, a widely accepted process ideal for most stainless steels. For environmentally conscious or delicate applications, citric acid passivation offers a safer, biodegradable alternative that still meets stringent cleanliness standards.

All of our processes adhere to major industry standards, including ASTM A967, AMS 2700, and ASTM B912, ensuring traceability and compliance from start to finish.

Industries We Serve

Light Metals Coloring has built a reputation across a broad range of industries, thanks to our attention to detail and commitment to precision.

In aerospace, passivation is a go-to process for structural components, brackets, and fasteners. In the medical field, passivation helps ensure surgical tools and implants are not only sterile but also durable and resistant to bodily fluids. Our processes also support the marine industry, where parts need to survive long-term exposure to saltwater and humidity.

Why Light Metals Coloring?

With more than seven decades of experience in metal finishing, Light Metals Coloring is more than just a vendor—we're a partner in performance. Our team understands the critical role surface finishing plays in part longevity, safety, and compliance. That’s why we combine skilled technicians with advanced equipment and rigorous process controls to deliver consistent results for our clients.

We also recognize that speed matters. Our facility is designed for efficiency, with streamlined workflows that allow us to offer fast turnaround times without compromising on quality. LMC has the capabilities, certifications, and expertise to meet your needs no matter the industry.
